What Is the Nepal Premier League? A Beginner's Guide to NPL Cricket

If a friend has dragged you into an NPL group chat and you have no idea what is going on, this one is for you.

What is it?

The Nepal Premier League is Nepal's franchise T20 cricket league, run by the Cricket Association of Nepal. Think of it as Nepal's version of the IPL, on a smaller scale. Eight teams, mostly named after provinces and cities, play each other over about four weeks.

When did it start?

The first season was in 2024 and Janakpur Bolts won it. Lumbini Lions won the second in 2025. The third season runs from 26 October to 21 November 2026. See our winners list.

Who plays?

Mostly Nepali players, including the stars of the national team like Rohit Paudel, Dipendra Singh Airee and Sandeep Lamichhane. Each team can also add a few overseas players. This year that includes names like David Warner and Angelo Mathews. At least seven Nepali players must be in every XI.

Where are the games?

Every match is at the TU International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, on the edge of Kathmandu. The crowds there are loud, young and a lot of fun.

How does the season work?

Each team plays the other seven once. The top four reach the playoffs, then there is a final. Our playoff explainer covers it in a couple of minutes.

What is new in 2026?

DRS for the first time, ICC recognition so the stats count in official T20 records, and a bigger overseas player quota.

How can I watch?

On Himalaya Sports on TV in Nepal, on the NETTV app, or on Star Sports abroad. Our watch guide has the details.

Pick a team

Honestly, that is the best way to enjoy it. Have a look at the eight teams and pick one. You will be shouting at the screen by the second game.
