David Warner Joins Kathmandu Gurkhas for NPL 2026

Let's be honest, this one got everybody talking.

Kathmandu Gurkhas announced David Warner as an overseas signing on 15 September, with a video message from the man himself. The Kathmandu Post reported the signing and later listed him among the confirmed names in its season overview. (Worth knowing: the Post's parent group chairman has an investment in the franchise, and the paper says so.)

Why it matters

Warner is one of the most recognisable T20 openers of the last 15 years. Seeing him walk out in Kirtipur is the kind of thing that gets people who have never watched Nepali cricket to switch on. That attention helps everyone, including the Nepali players sharing the field with him.

What he brings to the team

On the field, an aggressive left-handed opener who knows how to use a powerplay. Off it, the experience is probably worth as much. Young batters in that dressing room will get to ask him how he prepares, how he handles a bad start, how he picks bowlers to target. That stuff rubs off.

Keep your expectations sensible

An announcement is not the same as a guarantee for every match. We do not know exactly how many games he will play or when he arrives. There are also only four overseas spots in the XI, so Kathmandu still have to balance the side. Check the team sheet on match day rather than trusting a hype graphic.

It is not a one-man team

Kathmandu still need their Nepali core to do the heavy lifting. Karan KC captains the side, and the bowling has to hold up regardless of who opens. A T20 title is won by eleven people, not one name on a poster.
